Married for 31 years Iain and I started our first business together when we were both 21 and over the next 32 years have gained a vast knowledge of all aspects of business.During this time our main business has been in retail having owned a number of retail outlets in the Midlands specializing first in high fashion and then progressing to snow sports and surf specific brands.During the 80’s Iain successfully manufactured a range of street-wear which was sold to retailers both in this country and Europe.
I trained as a Staff Nurse and worked in this field until 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with Behcets disease that was causing deterioration of my eyesight, as a consequence was unable to carry on working in this field.This forced me into making major life style changes.We decided to set up a retail business in our home town of Sutton Coldfield that I would run.This was very successful for a while, our children were getting older and they also enjoyed working in the business. This was quite a unique angle on retail by today’s standards, you don’t see many family run shops nowadays and our boys turned out to be natural business-men. However, retailing in the UK has become a tough business and thankfully we invested in property over the years and this has now become our main focus.
We had been landlords for over 22 years; however until recently it was really only a sideline which had been quietly ticking along with very little input from us. In 2008 we sold up and moved to Mid Wales where we have invested in property. I immersed myself in improving my knowledge and understanding as a Landlord together with my increasing knowledge, people skills acquired during years as a Staff Nurse including a personal need to work with people and a lifetime in business decided that I was well equipped to help other Landlords to maximize their letting potential and to improve their quality of life.
This has turned out to be a great move for me, all the things that I enjoy and earning a living into the bargain.Brilliant! And just to make life even more exciting 23rd July 2009 was the NLA women in property awards and amazingly, I won the catagory for Wales, we had a great night and made lots of new friends.
So, what about Iain? Well he has formed a parallel business, finding good investment property for fellow investors. This is one of those perfect times to invest in properties, prices as low as they are likely to go and not enough rental properties available.
